An unexpected email arrives. The sender looks familiar, the offer sounds useful, and the links appear convincing. Should you click, ignore it, or report it? In last month’s article, ChatGPT-5.6 Sol and Codex is new to ChatGPT: Get it for less on GamsGo, we understood that ChatGPT has evolved from an Ask me something “Chat” AI model to a Give me something to do “Work” AI model. Indeed, in this article, we will ask ChatGPT Work to accomplish a very important task- spot online scams. To reach a definite conclusion, I conducted two practical tests.
A real estate newsletter with an unusual address
The first message came from an address ending in realestatealerts.com. Its username included an unusual string of letters and numbers. The email contained a market report for property listings, agent contact information, and long links using links.mail.insiderealestate.com.
The prompt
Is this sender legitimate? Assess this market-report email and explain what the evidence proves and what it does not.
ChatGPT Work’s response
The address alone was insufficient. The unusual username could be an automatically generated identifier; its appearance did not establish fraud. In addition, independent checking also found the realtor in a reputable official agent roster, with the same mobile and office numbers included in the email.
However, to verify sender authenticity, ChatGPT Work requested for the market-report email’s authentication results. In Gmail on a computer, open the message’s three-dot menu beside Reply and select “Show original” to find the authentication summary.
| Check | Result supplied |
| SPF | PASS |
| DKIM | PASS for realestatealerts.com |
| DMARC | PASS |
The Outcome
The combined evidence of email content and sender authenticity supports a likely authentic marketing email. Authentication, matching agent details, and plausible content were more persuasive together than any one clue alone.
My recommendation
An unusual email address or long tracking link is a clue to investigate, not an automatic verdict. Equally, sender authentication does not guarantee honesty or safety. A genuine newsletter may still be unwanted spam if you never requested it.
A potential client—or a misleading sales email?
This second message appeared to describe a prospective customer in Orlando seeking IT support and repeatedly offered to let me the recipient contact the customer for free.
The prompt
Is this email legitimate? Review the sender, links, and offer. Explain any warning signs and what I should verify before responding.
ChatGPT Work’s response
The initial assessment was that the message looked like plausible Bark marketing. The pasted contact buttons pointed to bark.com, and company details were consistent with a real business. However, that did not verify the sender, the customer, or the free offer. So, I supplied the email’s authentication results:
| Check | Result supplied |
| SPF | NEUTRAL |
| DKIM | PASS |
| DMARC | FAIL |
ChatGPT Work became even more suspicious. This is because the message did not authenticate as coming from bark.com. It then asked me to provide the actual “From Address” and specify whether it was received directly or as a forwarded message. That will help distinguish suspected impersonation from a forwarding issue.
The prompt
From Address: Bark via General Inquiries “info@cyberresourcehub.com”
Mailbox Type: Mailing list or Group mailbox
This shows the message reached me through info@cyberresourcehub.com rather than directly from Bark. That makes forwarding or redistribution a plausible explanation for the authentication results:
| Check | Result supplied |
| SPF | NEUTRAL – suggests an intermediary mailbox or group. |
| DKIM | PASS – for a domain associated with cyberresourcehub.com |
| DMARC | FAIL – can happen when a mailing-list processing disrupts original authentication |
The Outcome
The most useful part of this test was the changing assessment. Familiar branding and genuine company links were insufficient to establish email authenticity. The initial warning could not be viewed as conclusive without first establishing whether the email was forwarded. Furthermore, Google notes that legitimate mailing-list messages can have authentication problems.
My Recommendation
When assessing email authenticity, first identify what you are examining. Is it a direct message, a forwarded email, or an automated notification containing someone else’s submission? Provide ChatGPT Work the full context. Give ChatGPT the actual From address, Reply-To, authentication results, and forwarding context A legitimate company can be impersonated, and a legitimate forwarded message can look suspicious.

A verification checklist
ChatGPT Work helped explain unfamiliar headers, organize evidence, and identify the next useful question. These checks help detect domain impersonation. They do not verify the business proposition or the person controlling an account. In addition, ChatGPT Work needed correction as new information arrived. When prompted to spot spam, ask it to justify its output. Then use your personal oversight and independent checks is verify its output.
Furthermore, before pasting any prompt into ChatGPT Work, remove passwords, verification codes, account numbers, private correspondence, and personalized link tokens. An authentic notification does not make the enclosed content trustworthy.
